Welcome to the website for The Industrial Injuries Advisory Council

Introduction

The Industrial Injuries Advisory Council (IIAC) is a statutory body established under the National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Act 1946, which came into effect on 4 July 1948. It provides independent advice to the Secretary of State for the Department for Work and Pensions on matters relating to the Industrial Injury Disablement Benefit scheme.

The Council's Remit

The statutory provisions governing the Council's work are set out in Section 171 of the Social Security of the Social Security Administration Act 1992. The Council has three roles:

The Council is a non-executive body and has no power or authority to become involved in individual cases or in the decision-making process.

IIAC meets a minimum of 4 times each year.

The Industrial Injuries Advisory Council (IIAC) advises the Secretary of State for the Department for Work and Pensions on the prescription of industrial diseases, industrial accidents and on other matters relating to Industrial Injuries benefits. The Council is formed of medical, scientific and legal experts, and representatives of employers and employed earners.

IIAC is holding a public meeting at the Novotel, Birmingham on Thursday 26 June 2008 at 10.00. The aim is to give members of the public, and people with a professional interest in occupational diseases, the opportunity to learn about the work of the Council and to take part in a day of presentations and structured workshops.

This is the seventh public meeting of a series to be held throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
